Mac file organization features
Clear rules. Calm folders.
Mochi is a native Mac file organizer built around control: you choose the folders, define the rules, review uncertain decisions, and keep an undo path.
Organize only the folders you choose
Grant access to Downloads, Desktop, or any other folder one at a time. Mochi does not crawl your whole Mac. Folder permissions use macOS security-scoped bookmarks so the app can return only to locations you authorized.
Each watched folder remains visible in the app. Removing a folder from Mochi stops monitoring it without deleting the folder or its files. This narrow permission model makes it practical to test on one low-risk location before expanding to a larger workflow.
Local rules handle predictable files
Create rules from file extensions, names, dates, Finder tags, and other metadata. A PDF invoice can go to Invoices while screenshots can move to a dated folder. Rules execute locally and do not need an account or network connection.
A rule combines conditions with a destination you selected. Use narrow conditions for exact jobs, such as routing DMG and PKG installers, or combine several signals when a filename alone is not enough. Rules remain readable so you can understand why a file matched and refine the condition instead of debugging an opaque automation.
Review before files move
Potential moves can wait in a review queue. You see the file, proposed destination, and reason before approving. The history records completed operations, and undo can restore a moved file when the destination is still available.
Review mode is useful while a new rule is settling in. Approve the correct matches, reject the rest, and narrow the rule before it processes more files. Mochi checks destinations and does not silently replace an existing file with the same name.
History and undo preserve context
The activity view explains which file moved, where it went, and which rule or decision caused the move. Eligible operations can be undone from history. If a later change makes undo unsafe—for example, another file now occupies the original path—Mochi stops rather than overwriting data.
This journal is local to the Mac. It is designed for recovery and explanation, not surveillance, and file-level activity is not uploaded to Mochi’s website.
Useful presets without a rigid filing system
Start with common patterns for documents, screenshots, archives, and installers, then adapt them to the folders you already use. Mochi does not require a new global hierarchy. A designer, student, developer, and small-business owner can keep different destinations while using the same clear rule model.
Optional AI for ambiguous files
AI is off by default. When enabled, it suggests a destination only after ordinary rules cannot decide. Bring your own OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, or TypeSafe credentials, or use a local Ollama model. Suggestions remain reviewable and the model never receives filesystem access.
Mochi limits suggestions to destinations the client provides, validates the response locally, and keeps the actual file operation inside the Mac app. A model cannot invent an arbitrary path or approve its own work. Exact hosted model versions must pass the published safety gate before becoming eligible for broader use.

Native Mac behavior and open source visibility
Mochi supports macOS 13 or later on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs. API keys live in macOS Keychain, local rules work offline, and the release is distributed as a small native app rather than a browser wrapper. The source, release history, security policy, and distribution contract are public for inspection.
Before installing, review the current version and checksum. For a guided first run, follow the getting-started documentation. The free app includes rules, watched folders, review, history, undo, and bring-your-own-key AI; Mochi Pro is an optional future service.
Designed for gradual automation
Mochi does not ask you to automate an entire home directory on day one. Add one folder, observe a narrow rule, and decide when the behavior is predictable enough to keep. Different folders can remain at different levels of automation: one can use only manual review, while another relies on a mature local rule.
This staged approach also makes maintenance clearer. When your filing system changes, pause the affected rule, update its destination or conditions, and test it again without disturbing unrelated folders. The visible rule list and review queue make the active policy easier to audit than a collection of hidden scripts.
Every major path remains optional. You do not need an account for local organization, you do not need AI for rules, and you do not need Mochi Pro to use review or undo. The product is useful as a local rule-based Mac file organizer before any network feature is enabled.
